Surgical smoke in laparoscopic surgery: Exposure risks and the role of at-source smoke control

In the operating room, the development of electrosurgical units, lasers, and energy-based devices has yielded significant benefits regarding hemostasis, tissue dissection, and surgical efficiency. However, when thermal energy interacts with tissue, a nearly unavoidable byproduct is generated: surgical smoke (or surgical plume).

Surgical smoke is sometimes viewed merely as an issue concerning odor or visibility within the surgical field. In reality, numerous professional organizations and occupational safety agencies regard the management of surgical smoke as a matter of operating room environmental safety and occupational exposure. NIOSH has issued recommendations for controlling smoke from lasers and electrosurgical devices since 1996, and AORN continues to emphasize smoke capture and filtration at the source as a critical control measure

The CORAZOR® UROMED biopsy device was used in a clinical study published in the *World Journal of Urology* (2025). In this study involving 636 patients undergoing transperineal prostate biopsies, the device was used to obtain tissue samples with an overall complication rate of just 1.9% and an infection rate of 1.1%, even without the use of prophylactic antibiotics.

In the field of assisted reproductive technology, the success of an IVF cycle depends not only on the ovulation induction protocol or embryo culture technique, but also on the smallest technical details at the time of oocyte retrieval (OPU). The oocyte retrieval needle is not just a tool; it is the doctor's "extended arm" in accessing and retrieving the oocytes in the safest way possible.

???? Notes on choosing an embryo transfer catheter in IVF: A clinical practice perspective
    1. Introduction
Embryo transfer (ET) is a decisive step in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. Even with high-quality embryos and favorable endometrium, the final outcome can still be significantly affected by the embryo transfer technique and instruments. In particular, the embryo transfer catheter plays a central role: a suitable catheter helps reduce endometrial trauma, ensures optimal embryo placement, and improves implantation rates.
